Hair waxing can be a painful experience — especially when it comes to certain areas. However, while eliminating pain is a bit of a gray area, there are several ways to reduce the pain.
Although there are several products on the market that claim to offer “pain-free hair removal,” waxing is the most popular way to get rid of unwanted hair for more than a couple days.
Sure, shaving may be easy and painless, but afterwards, hair grows back within a day or two, and at that point, there isn’t quite enough hair to shave again. And we all know, if we shave too soon after our previous shave, we are going to be left with razor burn and some seriously irritated skin.
Waxing, on the other hand, takes longer, but the hair removal lasts from several days to a couple of weeks, and if you continue with a waxing regimen, it can last even longer.
Below are five tips to making hair waxing a less painful experience:
1. MOISTURIZE DAILY
“I always tell my clients to exfoliate the ‘area’ daily and moisturize with coconut oil. Even if you procrastinate—which many of us do—by starting a couple of days before the next wax, you will be OK,” Los Angeles-based waxing guru Inez Laval revealed to The Zoe Report.
2. DULL THE PAIN
Thirty minutes before your waxing appointment, take two Advil, or, if you aren’t an Advil fan, Arnica in pellet form can also be used to reduce pain.
3. GO CAFFEINE FREE
“Skip your morning coffee day-of wax — it’s a natural stimulant that increases blood flow, which can cause more sensitivity on the surface of skin,” Laval explained.
4. TIMING IS EVERYTHING
The best time to get your wax is after three weeks of hair growth.
5. TRY GRAPHITE WAX
“Graphite wax is super smooth going on so it doesn’t pull on the hairs as it’s being applied,” Laval said. “Also it full of essential oils and vitamins that are known to reduce pain and inflammation which are beneficial to the skin during and after waxing.”
